According to the American Lung Association, “many cleaning supplies or household products can irritate the eyes or throat, or cause headaches and other health problems, including cancer.” The Association continues to list out cleaning supplies and household products that often contain toxins including the below:

Luckily, emerging companies are making an effort to support our health by ditching toxins and taking pride in better ingredients. A few different brands sent me their products to test out and review, so I’ve rounded them all up in this post to share a safe cleaning solution for each room in your home. One brand also shared environmentally-friendly swaps for items typically used and thrown away every day, so I’ve included that as well!

Air Scense: Air Freshener & Toilet Pre-Spray

Air Scense is new to me, but they’ve actually been naturally refreshing homes for more than 20 years. This brand uses the finest essential oils and plant extractives in both their air fresheners and toilet pre-sprays. Unlike many aroma products that simply mask a bad smell, Air Scense neutralizes and refreshes.

My Thoughts:

I’ve been using the orange scent so far, and it smells SO light and natural. It smells like freshly squeezed oranges, not fake chemical orange! The air freshener can be used throughout the home, not just the bathroom. I like to walk around our apartment and spritz each room to freshen things up and reset the air, especially right after I take out the trash.

As a TMI-style side note, I tested out the toilet pre-spray. It works. I keep a toilet pre-spray and air freshener on the back of each toilet in our apartment, and the pre-spray also makes a great purse item for when duty calls on the go!

Lemi Shine – Disinfecting Multi-Purpose & Bathroom Cleaners

My Thoughts:

I’m so happy to discover a brand that makes a wide variety of well-needed non-toxic products. Lemi Shine gets the job done, but with safe ingredients. While the smell factor is a big one for me, I should note that I don’t LOVE the smell (like I LOVE the smell of Method’s Grapefruit All-Purpose Natural Surface Spray), but I’d rather it be natural than infused with unhealthy fragrance. The smell isn’t bad, it’s just more in line with a typical cleaning product smell, but lighter and non-offensive. Method’s scents don’t smell like typical cleaning products, which is why I rate their smell factor higher.

Tru Earth – Eco-friendly Laundry Detergent & Cleaning Strips, Stainless Steel Straws, & Makeup Remover Pads

Tru Earth makes a variety of eco and health-oriented products – laundry detergent strips, disinfecting multi-surface cleaner, stainless steel straws, makeup remover pads, wool dryer balls, and more. This brand is not only eco-friendly but also good for your skin thanks to conscious decisions around ingredients, such as steering clear of added dyes and offering fragrance-free varieties. Founders of Tru Earth aim to reduce waste, by minimizing giant plastic packaging (like the jugs of detergent we’re all used to) and encouraging us to shift to re-usable products.

True Earth is based in Canada and their full range of products are not yet widely available in US stores. With this in mind, they offer free shipping on all orders. My Thoughts:

At first, I was skeptical of how the laundry strips would work out, and it turns out they actually work BETTER than regular detergent! Our apartment came with an old top-loading washing machine, and it often leads to undissolved pools of detergent being left behind on clothes. I put these strips to test on a stinky load of our fitness gear, and I was pleasantly surprised to find that the tiny strip worked its cleaning magic and left behind no residue.

Overall, I have a really big brand crush on Tru Earth. Their innovative and minimalist strategy is really cool! I’ve been using their stainless steel straws each morning when I drink my workout smoothies. The reusable makeup remover pads are SO SOFT too, and I love how they come with a garment bag to keep them all together for washing.
