2020 placed a well-needed spotlight on mental health. The pandemic drastically changed my routine, and it gave me an opportunity to realize the importance of honoring my priorities, my own energy being one of them. I’ve learned there are so many facets to wellness, and in the spirit of positivity, I wanted to share some self-care ideas that help lift my mood.
Here are some great examples of how you can practice the 6 dimensions of self-care to improve your mental health:
1. Intellectual
- Take accountability for your own knowledge and skills, utilizing YouTube as a free classroom.
- Set off on a new goal, activity, or routine that safely pushes your comfort zone, and tell yourself that you can accomplish it.
- Listen to a positive, educational podcast.
- Remind yourself that you are constantly growing and can learn from your mistakes.
2. Emotional
- Be kind to yourself and others.
- Say no to feelings of obligation that disturb your peace.
- Resist the urge to explain yourself or make excuses.
3. Physical
- Establish a healthy sleeping pattern that will help you conquer each day.
- Workout regularly, and listen to your body when it needs a break.
- Fuel your system with a clean, balanced diet that leaves room for treats in moderation.
- Go on a walk, breathe in fresh air, and soak in Vitamin D.
4. Spiritual
- Pray to God to show appreciation for His blessings, and feel His protection when you are feeling low.
- Pause and appreciate “the now,” and acknowledge each accomplishment.
- Focus on the “good” in your life and reflect on what you’re thankful for each day.
5. Sensory
- Pamper yourself with a hot bath or at-home spa night.
- Listen to happy or relaxing music.
- Clean and re-arrange your space to feel refreshed.
- Do something creative such as painting or playing an instrument.
6. Social
- Spend time with loved ones.
- Surround yourself with those that lift you up.
- Dodge the spiral of toxic people and don’t waste your energy on their opinion.
